What is Seasonal Flu?

Seasonal flu is a common viral illness. It is spread via droplets from coughs and sneezes, and can be highly infectious. It has the potential to affect a large number of working adults of all ages. All those identified as vulnerable, should be encouraged to receive an annual flu vaccine. It is frequently mistaken to be similar to a common cold, however, the flu has more severe symptoms and incubation/infective periods tend to last longer. Whilst it is possible to catch the flu all year round, it is particularly more common in winter. This is why it is referred to as the seasonal flu.

Protecting Your Employees

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic, it has now become essential to protect your workers against preventable illnesses. The flu can aggravate symptoms of the virus, or alternatively flu like symptoms can be misdiagnosed for Covid-19. By immunising your workers against the flu, you are protecting their health ensuring your workers are less vulnerable to possible adverse affects of the virus.

Offering flu vaccinations is a simple and cost-effective way to help keep your employees healthy and cut down on absences. On average, the number of sick days taken by employees who contract the flu is 5.6.

The number of average sick days has fallen in comparison to previous years, but can be further improved if more of the working force is vaccinated, as this reduces the risk of transmission between colleagues.   ​

NHS Flu Vaccine

The flu vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine. It’s offered every year on the NHS to help protect people at risk of flu and its complications.

Flu Vaccine & Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Flu Vaccination is important because:

– If you’re at higher risk from coronavirus, you’re also more at risk of problems from flu.

– If you get flu and coronavirus at the same time, research shows you’re more likely to be seriously ill.

– It’ll help to reduce pressure on the NHS and social care staff who may be dealing with coronavirus patients.

– If you’ve had COVID-19, it’s safe to have the flu vaccine. It’ll be effective at helping to prevent flu.

Who can have the flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine is given to people who:

– Are 50 and over (including those who’ll be 50 by 31 March 2021)

– Have certain health conditions

– Are pregnant

– Are in long-stay residential care

– Receive a carer’s allowance, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person who may be at risk if you get sick

– Live with someone who’s at high risk from coronavirus (on the NHS shielded patient list)

– Frontline health or social care workers

Here at Victoria pharmacy we provide emergency contraception that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if the contraception you have used has failed – for example, a condom has split or you have missed a pill.

Levonelle or ellaOne

There are 2 types of pills we offer:Levonelle or ellaOne (the “morning after” pill)You need to take the emergency contraceptive pill within 3 days (Levonelle) or 5 days (ellaOne) of unprotected sex for it to be effective – the sooner you take it, the more effective it’ll be.The emergency contraceptive pill can make your next period earlier, later or more painful than usual. If you’re sick (vomit) within 2 hours of taking Levonelle or 3 hours of taking ellaOne, go to your GP, pharmacist or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic, as you’ll need to take another dose or have an IUD fitted.

Levonelle and ellaOne don’t continue to protect you against pregnancy – if you have unprotected sex at any time after taking the emergency pill, you can become pregnant. They aren’t intended to be used as a regular form of contraception. But you can use emergency contraception more than once in a menstrual cycle if you need to.

Who can use the emergency pill?

Most women can use the emergency contraceptive pill. This includes women who can’t use hormonal contraception, such as the combined pill and contraceptive patch. You may not be able to take the emergency contraceptive pill if you’re allergic to anything in it, have severe asthma or take any medicines that may interact with it, such as:

– The herbal medicine St John’s Wort

– Some medicines used to treat epilepsy, HIV or tuberculosis (TB)

– Medicine to make your stomach less acidic, such as omeprazole

– Some less commonly used antibiotics (rifampicin and rifabutin)

– ellaOne can’t be used if you’re already taking one of these medicines, as it may not work

– Levonelle may still be used, but the dose may need to be increased

Tell the pharmacist what medicines you’re taking, and they can advise you if they’re safe to take with the emergency contraceptive pill. You can also read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine for more information.

What if I am Breasfeeding?

Levonelle is safe to take while breastfeeding. Although small amounts of the hormones in the pill may pass into your breast milk, it’s not thought to be harmful to your baby.

The safety of ellaOne during breastfeeding isn’t yet known. The manufacturer recommends that you don’t breastfeed for one week after taking this pill.

Side Effects of Using the Emergency Pill

There are no serious or long-term side effects from taking the emergency contraceptive pill but it can cause:

– Headaches

– Tummy pain

– Changes to your next period – it can be earlier, later or more painful than usual

– Feeling or being sick – get medical attention if you’re sick within 2 hours of taking Levonelle or 3 hours of taking ellaOne, as you’ll need to take another dose or have an IUD fitted

See a GP or nurse if your symptoms don’t go away after a few days or if:

– You think you might be pregnant

– Your next period is more than 7 days late

– Your period is shorter or lighter than usual

– You have sudden pain in your lower tummy

This services staffed by expert advisers provide a range of proven methods to help you quit. They’ll give you accurate information and advice, as well as professional support, during the first few months you stop smoking.

At your first session, you’ll also discuss NHS-endorsed stop smoking treatments available to help you. These are nicotine replacement products (including patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators and mouth and nasal sprays).

No one is forced to use treatment but we’ll encourage it because the results are better. We can help you decide which type of treatment is right for you and how to use it. In some cases, we can directly supply you with the treatment before you leave, or we can arrange for you to receive a prescription or a voucher for it.

There’s evidence that e-cigarettes can help people stop smoking. E-cigarettes aren’t currently available as medicines so they can’t be supplied by stop smoking services or prescribed on the NHS, but if you want to use an e-cigarette to help you quit, you can still get advice and support from a stop smoking adviser to give you the best chance of success. E-Cigarettes can be purchased within the pharmacy for your convenience.

As a general rule, you’ll have weekly face-to-face or phone contact with your adviser for the first 4 weeks after you quit smoking, then less frequently for a further 8 weeks. At each meeting, you’ll receive a supply of (or prescription for) a stop smoking treatment if you’re using it, and have your carbon monoxide level measured. You’ll have an emergency number for out-of-hours times to help you cope with cravings and avoid lighting up if you’re struggling. Measuring carbon monoxide levels isn’t about checking up on you. It’s more to motivate you to stay smoke-free by showing how your body is already recovering.

Stop smoking advisers can also help you identify difficult situations when there may be a strong temptation to relapse and start smoking. They can help you come up with ways to cope with or avoid these situations.

If you do relapse, we won’t judge or nag you or take it personally. We’re a friendly face that understands how difficult it is to quit, and we’ll help you get back on track to becoming a non-smoker.

A blood pressure test is a simple way of checking if your blood pressure is too high or too low. Blood pressure is the term used to describe the strength with which your blood pushes on the sides of your arteries as it’s pumped around your body.

High blood pressure (hypertension) can put a strain on your arteries and organs, which can increase your risk of developing serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Low blood pressure (hypotension) isn’t usually as serious, although it can cause dizziness and fainting in some people.

A blood pressure test is the only way to find out if your blood pressure is too high or too low, because most people won’t have any obvious symptoms. Having a test is easy and could save your life.

Understanding your Blood Pressure Reading

Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and is given as 2 figures:

– Systolic pressure – the pressure when your heart pushes blood out

– Diastolic pressure – the pressure when your heart rests between beats

For example, if your blood pressure is “140 over 90” or 140/90mmHg, it means you have a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg and a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg.

As a general guide:

– Normal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg

– High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher

– Low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower

– A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don't take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.

Controlling your Blood Pressure

If your blood pressure is found to be too high or too low, your GP or the healthcare professional performing the test can advise you about ways to control it. This may involve:

– Adopting a healthy, balanced diet and restricting your salt intake

– Getting regular exercise

– Cutting down on alcohol

– Losing weight

– Stopping smoking

– Taking medication, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or calcium channel blockers

In some cases, you may be referred to a doctor such as a cardiologist (heart specialist) to discuss treatment options.
